01 Dec 2018

The second league meeting of the Horsham District Primary Schools Hockey League 2018/19 took place last Friday on the Tanbridge School Astro pitch. After the conclusion of the previous meeting two weeks earlier, the 15 teams had their leagues determined by their results with five teams in each division. With promotion and relegation in place for the third and final league meeting on 7 December there was everything to play for.

Northolmes A emerged victorious in division 1 and were the only team to remain unbeaten on the night as they finished on 18 points. They realised they had to up their game after a 1-1 draw in their first game against Southwater and great team work saw the younger players Evan and Albie (both in Year 5) scoring goals as they won all three of their remaining matches. They beat Steyning A 2-0, Shelley 2-0 and finished off with a 3-0 win against Leechpool.

Shelley finished in second position on 14 points as they secured two wins, a draw and a loss. A 1-0 opening win against Leechpool was followed by a 0-0 draw against Steyning A, the 2-0 defeat against Northolmes and a 2-0 victory against Southwater which meant the only goals they conceded were in the defeat to Northolmes. Third place on the night was claimed by Steyning A with 12 points following a win, two draws and one defeat against league winners Northolmes A. Southwater were just a point behind on 11 points and maintain their status in the top division ahead of the last meeting. Oscar Marriott was superb in goal having only found out at lunchtime that he was going in goal because the Southwater regular goalie was ill! Reggie Tydd and Lewis Ravenhill were excellent in defence and there were more goals for Ryan Allen up front. Leechpool were the unfortunate team to be relegated as they ended up losing three games and drawing the other to finish on 6 points. Zack Feist had the night of his life and has made huge progress from the first tournament and proved himself a fantastic defender and despite the team losing three of their games Louis Arnold made a wonderful debut in goal and saved his team from losing by bigger margins conceding only 6 goals in the four matches.

Kingslea A will replace Leechpool in Division 1 in the third and final meeting as they topped Division 2, all be it by the finest of margins! They started with a 1-1 draw against Castlewood and then followed this up with a 5-0 win against Steyning B and a 1-0 win against North Heath A. Castlewood went on to secure three straight victories after their draw against Kingslea A which meant they finished the night on 18 points and had scored 7 goals. Kingslea A went in to their final game against their B team knowing that a victory by any score would take them up to 18 points but would see them through as winners on goal scored as they had already scored 7 goals in their opening three games. The Kingslea A v Kingslea B game was the last of the evening and proved to be a really tight game but with just over a minute left, Kingslea A scored the vital goal to secure a 1-0 win and means they will be testing themselves in the top division in the final league meeting.

Castlewood will be disappointed to finish in second place especially as they were unbeaten on the night but will hope they can go on and win division 2 when the action resumes in two weeks’ time. Kingslea B finished in third place after a win, a draw and two defeats meant they got 10 points. North Heath A finished on 8 points to secure fourth place and ensure they remain in division 2 after drawing two and losing two of their four games on the night. Steyning B were the team that finished bottom of the group on 6 points and means they have been relegated to division 3

St Mary’s (Horsham) stormed through Division 3 picking up four straight wins on their way to topping the division with 20 points and will therefore be playing in Division 2 in the last meeting. Their impressive form saw them score seven goals and did not concede any during their four games which was a remarkable turnaround from the first meeting where they lost all four games without scoring a goal. First up for St Mary’s was Kingslea C who they dispatched 2-0 and this was followed up by a 1-0 win against North Heath B and 2-0 wins against Northolmes B and Steyning C. North Heath B and Northolmes B both finished on 12 points after securing a win, a draw and two defeats each but it was North Heath B who claimed second place on goal difference after scoring 5 goals and conceding 4 compared to Northolmes B who also conceded four goals but only managed to score three themselves. The Northolmes B team did not score any goals in the first meeting and were determined to score their first tournament goal, if only to see if their PE teacher could do a cartwheel!

Kingslea C finished fourth in division 3 with 10 points. They only lost one game on the night but scoring goals was an issue and they had to settle for three draws. Steyning C finished in fifth place following a draw and three defeats as they finished on six points.

The boys and girls received a nice surprise during the evening as the current England Under 18 goalkeeper ‘Stevie’ turned up to watch. Stevie lives locally, is an ex pupil at Steyning Primary School and actually played in this very tournament when he was younger and was able to talk to the players during the evening and answer some of their questions.

The umpires were provided by Horsham Hockey Club and all of them showed great understanding and knowledge of the game and will be back again to help with the third and final instalment of this year’s hockey league that takes place on Friday 7th December.
